Bed and Breakfast Tourist board grading, Scotland

Scottish B&B - 3, 4, 5 star accommodation

B&Bs participating in the Scottish Tourist Board Star Grading scheme are visited annually, often by way of a 'mystery guest' overnight stay. Bed and Breakfast awards are graded 1,2,3,4 or 5 Stars. The Scottish Tourist Board assessment is on quality, rather than on the size or range of facilities on offer and the stars can be translated as follows:
5 stars - ***** - Exceptional, world-class
4 stars - **** - Excellent
3 stars - *** - Very good
2 stars - ** - Good
1 star - * - Fair, acceptable

Scottish Tourist Board inspectors sample the hospitality, the service and quality of food served as well as the condition and comfort of the Bed and Breakfast accommodation. Marks are awarded out of ten in each of over 40 different categories.

Only if the B&B obtains 84-92% of possible marks will the Four Star Scottish Tourist Board grade be awarded and B&B owners are proud of having received this Excellent rating. There are very few Five Star ratings in Scotland - they are very exceptional B&B's.
